HomeworkWeek of April 23 thru May 11,2012

Reading: We are completing Unique Animals of the Southwest , a non-fiction selection about how various animals of the southwestern region  of the country adapt to conditions in the environment to survive.  This is the last selection in this theme.  The next theme on storytelling will explore various genres such as folktales, fables, and fairy tales and how the art of storytelling is an important part of our culture. We will not begin this theme until  after the NJASK .

Language Arts:  We continue to practice writing skills in our reading responses and journal writing.

Spelling:  We are moving right along. There are only 4 units left and the second half of the core list to be tested.  There will not be any spelling the week of the NJASK. The students are practicing putting their list words into ABC order and practicing writing their words in cursive. Check out Spelling City for games to reinforce the list each week.

Math:   We have completed fractions and probability and have been working through various topics in the Measuring Up practice book.  I have been trying to expose the children to a variety of topics in order to prepare them for what may be on the NJASK.  We are also reviewing the basic facts of multiplication and division.

Social Studies:    We have completed the chapter on communities and have begun the chapter on government.  In this chapter we will discuss local, state and federal governments and the monuments and memorials in the nation's capital,  Washington, D.C.

ScienceShortly after the NJASK, we will begin the chapter on ecosystems and animal adaptations.  This will lead directly into the research paper on endangered animals.

Please encourage the children to have a book for Accelerated Reader.  Many of them select books, but do not follow through with reading and taking tests.

The student of the week projects have been very enjoyable.  Please let me know if you need another schedule for your child's upcoming project.

Thank you for responding so quickly to our "Advertisement Book Project."  If you have not seen the assignment, please drop me an e-mail and I will send home another form explaining the project.

Birthdays:  We enjoy celebrating birthdays, so please do not hesitate to send in treats for your child's special day!  There are no food allergies.
