Holland Township School

Ms. Dech's Class 2014-2015

May 18th through May 29th

Reading: We are in the next to the last theme in the Treasures series. We are reading an excerpt from Charlotte's Web by E.B. White, entitled "Wilbur's Boast."

In Guided Reading we have just finished the book Gooseberry Park by Cynthia Rylant.  The children really enjoyed this book, and we are planning to read the sequel Gooseberry Park and the Master Plan. We used literature circles and journal responses to explore the book.  The children are now writing letters to Cynthia Rylant and are hoping to get responses back from her over the summer.

Language Arts:  We have two units of spelling left, and then we will test the second list of core words. The test scores have been very good, but the students need to carry over their knowledge of the list words to everyday writing. We are polishing our editing skills using Daily Oral Language Reviews.

Advertisement Book Reports:  The children did a great job "selling" their books.  The props and costumes were fantastic; not to mention the treats!

Poetry Project:  The children are enjoying selecting, reciting, and sharing their poems with the class.

Math: We are continuing to review all topics in math by use of the Daily Common Core Reviews. We are now working on telling time and I will introduce division with remainders over the next week.  This will be a great way to review our multiplication and division facts and get ready for fourth grade.

Science: We are studying plants, plant parts, and the plant cycle.  we will have a test on this chapter soon.  A test alert will be sent home with the information.

Endangered Animal Report: The children have selected their endangered animal to research and have begun taking notes.  They will write a report and do a power point presentation based on the information they have gathered.  They will also construct a diorama of their animal to share with the class.

Spelling City-  This is a helpful website where the children can review their spelling lists through various activities.  The following directions are how to access the site.
